Our university is a project partner in the LIFE integrated project, which will run for 9 years and aims to support the development of a green vision for the region. In line with this objective, Coal Commission Secretariat has assisted the seven municipalities of the Heves County most affected by the just transition to join the European Covenant of Mayors.
The Covenant of Mayors was launched in Europe in 2008 to bring together local authorities that volunteer to meet and exceed the EU’s climate and energy targets. The initiative now brings together more than 7,000 local and regional authorities from 57 countries, bringing together the strengths of a global, multi-stakeholder movement and the technical and methodological support offered by committed agencies.
The municipalities involved in the transition in Heves County have submitted their declaration of membership by forming a group (the Mátra Power Plant Area) with the support of the Secretariat. The main liaison tasks are carried out by the Coal Commission Secretariat.
Membership provides a high degree of international visibility, and the benefits of membership include a wide range of opportunities for networking, cooperation, knowledge exchange and capacity building activities on various topics through the European Covenant of Mayors Office. The members of the Covenant benefit from the highest level of professional support through the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission.
