Our staff represented our LIFE integrated project at an academic event in Kozani, in the centre of the West Macedonia coal region. The event took place in the framework of the CINTRAN Horizon 2020 project, which investigates the characteristics and dynamics of changes in European coal regions. The main objective of the event was to provide participants with the opportunity to find replicable solutions to address the challenges of just transition through networking.

More than 50 participants from 15 countries attended the event. The Northern Hungarian Coal Region was represented by the Coal Commission Secretariat of the Eszterházy Károly Catholic University and the Heves County Chamber of Commerce and Industry. In addition to the plenary presentations, several workshops were held on the following topics: energy community building, stakeholder involvement, territorial fair transition plans.

Our region was also given the opportunity to run its own workshop on the challenges we face in terms of economic diversification. Participants worked in teams to explore how each coal region envisages achieving economic diversification. The event ended with a field trip to the Lignite Mining Centre of Western Macedonia, where participants learned about good practices in alternative reclamation.

The conference was organised in the framework of the LIFE IP North-HU-Trans project.
