In the framework of the LIFE IP North-HU-Trans project, we consider it important to build links with other LIFE integrated projects and to share experiences. In this framework we had the opportunity to visit DIADYMA SA (Αρχική – ΔΙΑΔΥΜΑ ΑΕ (diadyma.gr)) in Kozani (Greece, West Macedonia coal region).

The main objective of DIADYMA SA is the design, implementation and operation of a regional integrated waste management system in Western Macedonia, using sustainable management methods, in order to achieve the objectives of national and European legislation. The organisation is involved in the implementation of several international projects, including the consortium partner of the LIFE-IP CEI-Greece project, whose objectives contribute to the development of circular economy in Greece. DIADYMA SA will design a network for the collection, sorting and storage of small quantities of hazardous waste throughout the Western Macedonia region. During the meeting, the delegation members also had the opportunity to learn about the organisation’s project ideas for future implementation in the framework of the just transition.

During the programme, the delegation had the opportunity to meet with the Governor of the West Macedonia coal region, Mr Georgios Kasapidis, the mayors of the municipalities involved in the Just Transition and local businesses that have already started to diversify their economy towards green. The workshops were complemented by field exercises, which also provided the delegation members with good practices on alternative reclamation.

The Just Transition Fund is a financial instrument of the Cohesion Policy, which aims to support areas facing serious socio-economic challenges resulting from the process of transition to climate neutrality. The Just Transition Fund will support the implementation of the European Green Deal, which aims to make the EU climate neutral by 2050. The novelty of the fund means that knowledge sharing and exchange of experience between coal regions is of particular importance.

The neteorking was organised by the Coal Commission Secretariat in the framework of the LIFE IP North-HU-Trans project.
